ERN ReCONNET illuminates the Leaning Tower of Pisa for Rare Disease Day

 In News

ERN ReCONNET marked Rare Disease Day with a powerful and symbolic initiative by illuminating the iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa, transforming one of Europe’s most recognisable monuments into a beacon of awareness and solidarity.

Set against the night sky, the illuminated tower conveyed a message that extends beyond architecture. Its distinctive tilt reflects themes of resilience, balance, and the importance of strong foundations—values that resonate deeply with the rare disease community. The initiative highlighted how structures that may appear fragile can remain strong when supported by collaboration and shared expertise.

Through this visual action, ERN ReCONNET reinforced its ongoing commitment to patients living with rare and complex connective tissue and musculoskeletal diseases. The illumination also symbolised the collective work of the 24 European Reference Networks, which bring together healthcare providers, researchers, and patient representatives across Europe to improve diagnosis, treatment, and quality of life.

Rare diseases individually affect small patient populations  but collectively, they impact millions of people and families worldwide. Initiatives such as this serve as an important reminder that behind every diagnosis there is a personal story of challenges, resilience, and hope.

The event in Pisa underscores the importance of cross-border cooperation, knowledge sharing, and patient-centred care—principles strongly supported by the European Commission and embedded in the mission of the ERNs.

This year’s message was clear: meaningful progress in rare diseases depends on unity across countries, disciplines, and communities. Let us continue working together to improve the lives of people living with rare and complex conditions.
